You are not alone.

What is Religious Trauma?

  • Religious Trauma.

Some call it “church hurt” others recognize it as being excommunicated. Religious trauma may take many forms but at its core, the distress you experienced is related to an adverse experience with religion in its many forms. According to PRRI “Around one-quarter of Americans (26%) identify as religiously unaffiliated in 2023, a 5 percentage point increase from 21% in 2013.” with (21.9%) reporting to the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality journal that religious trauma, such as the hypocrisy of the sexual abuse scandals” have been their motive to leaving.

  • Do I have it?
